Mobile Barcode Scanners Put to the Test: Which One Scanned PDF417 the Best?

In a recent blog post from CartoONG, a data management service provider for the non-profit sector, Sandra Sudhoff, technical director at CartoONG, compared several major barcode scanning apps currently available for the Android operating system, including ZXing Barcode Scanner, Inigma, Scan ME, BarClone, Manatee Works, and others who all claim to support PDF417 scans to better understand which performed best when scanning various PDF417 codes.

She tested three different code types, each with increased density, on a Samsung Galaxy and an Ericsson Xperia Pro device and found that 71 percent of the time, the scan failed entirely. More precisely, XZing, AyCodeScanGen, ScanME, BarClone, and Inigma all failed to scan any of the codes while Accusoft and QR Barcode Scanner partially performed. Of the apps tested, Manatee Works’ barcode scanner was the only one that was able to scan ALL THREE of the test codes.

Obviously, we are thrilled to see how well Manatee Works stacks up against the competition. Over the past year, we have invested hundreds of hours into the further development of our app and SDK to ensure that, when we say we’re the industry leader, we can stand behind that claim. And we continue to enhance the performance of our SDK, all at no additional cost to our customers.
